Reno is the natural basecamp for Eastern Sierra hot springs. The drive south on US-395 toward Bridgeport, Mammoth, and the high country passes through some of the most concentrated free wild hot springs country in the United States. From Reno, start by comparing Travertine Hot Springs (2 hours 35 minutes south, free BLM travertine terraces above Bridgeport) and Mono Hot Springs (4 hours 30 minutes south in summer only, 1935 stone-cabin resort).
Most Reno weekenders use US-395 as the hot springs corridor. Travertine is a half-day drive each way for a free wild soak with Sierra Crest views. Mammoth-area free wild springs (Wild Willy's, Hilltop, Hot Creek Geological Site) are typically combined with Travertine on a weekend Eastern Sierra trip. Mono Hot Springs is summer-only because Kaiser Pass Road closes for winter.

Travertine Hot Springs near Bridgeport, California, is the closest detailed guide at 2 hours 35 minutes south on US-395. It is free, on BLM land, and open year-round. The dirt access road can be muddy or snow-covered in winter; check conditions before driving.
Reno itself has no major commercial hot springs operations. Steamboat Hot Springs north of Reno operates as a spa with mineral water but is not a guide on this site. Most Reno hot springs visitors drive south into the Eastern Sierra on US-395.
Travertine Hot Springs is the most iconic. Buckeye Hot Springs (free wild, 30 minutes west of Bridgeport) is a quieter alternative. Wild Willy's Hot Springs in Long Valley near Mammoth is free wild and easier to reach via boardwalk. Hot Creek Geological Site is dramatic to view but soaking is prohibited. We have a detailed guide for Travertine; the rest are coming.
No. Mono Hot Springs and Kaiser Pass Road close from late October through Memorial Day weekend. The road is gated and the resort is shuttered for winter. Plan Mono visits between Memorial Day and late October only.
About 100 miles south on US-395, roughly 2 hours in good weather. US-395 is a major Eastern Sierra highway and is plowed in winter but storms can close it briefly. The drive itself is scenic, with the Sierra Crest building to the west the whole way.
